Survivor and 19 years old!

October 30th, 2013 by Hunter

I was born 4 months premature and had NEC ( as well as a hole in my heart that they fixed, leaving me with a scar on my left shoulder blade). Of course when I was finally old enough to begin asking questions about the scar on my stomach, and a few scars near it, my mom explained it to me. I have been researching more into the topic, long term effects of NEC etc. But as I’ve grown up, I love my scars and am proud to wear them. Without them, I wouldn’t be alive today.

I am 19 years old now and will be going to Art school next year 🙂

I’m 35 and survived nec- just had my second child who is in the Nicu as I write this- I feel strangely connected to her and have very little stress with it. My husband calls my scar a shark bite! He thinks it’s cool- it’s definitely a badge of survival!

I have a son battling NEC currently, he is 3 weeks post being put back together and having different issues. I am encouraged reading success stories that he will pull through this.

My son Christian is a nine year survivor. He was not a preemie, but still had NEC. Had a decent amount of intestines removed and resected. It was a long, difficult , journey. He still has belly issues all of the time which keep me on high alert constantly. He is a very active, sweet child. He loves to explain about his battle scars! Its tough I know! I have felt that heartache, that nervousness, and helpless feeling. Faith and prayer will get you through.

Peace and love to you all.
